One Day

I suppose the most important thing is to make some sort of difference, she said
turning a blind eye to the news,
asking people not to talk about chemical burns
and dying children because – well – she is just so sensitive.

I suppose the most important thing is to make some sort of difference, she said
to her friend as they crossed the street,
avoiding the black man walking towards them because – well –
you just can’t be too safe.

I suppose the most important thing is to make some sort of difference, she said
while walking past a homeless man
begging for a dollar, and thinking to herself
“I work for my money. You should do the same.”

I suppose the most important thing is to make some sort of difference, she said
while never striving to do so herself.
